Changes and imminent ownership changes in South Africa's printed media industry since 1994

Pages 327-333 | Published online: 01 Dec 2010

Abstract

In the face of worldwide concern about the concentration of media ownership, South Africa has (until as recently as October 1995) been one of the prime examples in this regard. With the idea of a diversity of voices being in the best interest of all groups in society, the author gives an overview of ownership changes in the South African printed media industry since 1994. The ‘quiet revolution’ is not over yet and much still needs to happen before ownership will truly be spread throughout all spheres of society. One can state, however, that the South African media is on its way to playing a vital role in building and sustaining a just and democratic society.
