Abstract
Piezoceramic sound elements are finding application as audio alarms in various electronic equipments, telephones, watches, electronic games, toys, etc. The advantages of these components when compared with the electromagentic ones are their light weight, low power consumption, long life and reliability. Although, the basic raw materials for the manufacture of these elements are available in the country and expertise exists for the development of suitable compositions and standardization of the product, an indigenous viable manufacturing technology is yet to be evolved and some of the companies in India are planning for foreign collaboration involving large expenditure. The technologies involved in the production of this item and their relative merits and demerits are discussed. The necessity to develop mechanization/automation skills for cost effective indigenous manufacture of the product is indicated. BEL's efforts in the development of this product are presented.
