Abstract
An overview of medical expert systems with various configurations, classifications and the worldwide status are discussed in this paper with a view to make an assessment of the future. The assessment presented includes some specific areas for further research and development. Based on the application it has been classified into various categories. New trends in the methodology of development of medical expert systems have also been discussed.
