Ved Prakash Sandlas

Ved Prakash Sandlas was born on Feb 22,1945 at V & PO Manki, Samrala, Punjab. He obtained degrees of B Sc (Hons) Physics from University of Delhi in 1964 and BTech (Hons) Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1967.

He was appointed as Chief Controller R & D at DRDO HQ, New Delhi in July, 1996 and was designated as Distinguished Scientist in March, 1999, He is responsible for review and management of Electronics, Instrumentation, Computer Science and Systems Groups of DRDO Laboratories. Earlier, for four years, he was also responsible for Engineering Group of Laboratories, Information Systems, Personnel, Recruitment, Training, Sponsored Research and HRD functions.

He joined DRDO in Sep, 1986 as the Director, Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL), Dehradun and is credited with the introduction of satellite communications era in the defence services. During his 10-year tenure at Dehradun, DEAL emerged as a major systems laboratory of DRDO, specialising in the areas of Image Processing. Millimeter Wave Systems, Missile-Head Seekers, Electronic Surveillance, Telematics and Communication Systems. The high-quality work environment at DEAL was recognised through ISO 9001 certification in 1996—making DEAL the first DRDO laboratory to achieve this distinction.

Earlier, during 1967–86, he worked at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Trivandrum and grew up to become Group Director, Electronics and, the Mission Director for the two successful launches of Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) on May 31, 1981 and April 17, 1983. He was also responsible for pioneering developments in the areas of Pulse Code Modulation, Telemetry Systems, Communication Networks, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Electrical Integration and Automatic Checkout Systems.

He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at IIT, Kharagpur during 1984. He is recipient of DRDO's ‘Scientist of the Year’ award (1988) for outstanding contributions to Electronics, and FIE Foundation National Award (1998) for Science & Technology. He is Member Governing Council, National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (DoD). He is President, the dB Society of USA (India Chapter) and Microwave Applications Society of India; Patron, Society of EMC Engineers (India) and Doon Valley Amateur Radio Society.
