ABSTRACT
The essays written by Mahapa have no clear cut story, and each one of them is actually an account of a visit to a Northern Sotho homeland. To keep the reader's interest and to indicate the theme of his essays, Mahapa uses contrastive concepts, such as proximity-distance, present-past, familiarity-obscurity, historical time-fortime, order-chaos, church-mountain. The success Mahapa meets in his essays can (to a large extent) be attributed to the way he depicts the character of his guide, by whom the contrastive concepts are brought to the reader's attention. Furthermore, Mahapa uses symbolism, and the application of the cyclic principle to express his intention.
