A preliminary bibliographical survey of research on poetry in Southern African vernaculars

Pages 20-40 | Published online: 24 Oct 2012

Abstract

This article is an annotated bibliography of critiques on poetry in Northern Sotho, Southern Sotho, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. The first part lists these research works and the second comments on their merit. Unfortunately only honours articles, dissertations and theses have been considered.

The article reveals that very little research work has been accomplished in this field in certain languages, especially Tsonga, Tswana and Venda. On the other hand in Zulu, Southern Sotho and Xhosa a lot has been done. Scholars have concentrated more on traditional praise poetry. Turning to modern poetry only a few poets have received the attention they deserve. These include B.W. Vilakazi in Zulu, B.M. Khaketla and K.E. Ntsane in Southern Sotho and S.E.K. Mqhayi in Xhosa.

Vilakaz in Zulu, B.M. Khaketla en K.E. Ntsane in Suid-Sotho en S.E.K. Mqhayi in Xhosa.
