Nesting in Herero: Language Economy or Language Philosophy

Pages 121-134 | Published online: 24 Oct 2012

Abstract

The topic concerns in general asyntactic compounds in Herero of type

whereby cpt3 determinates the synthetic structure or/and stem form of this type of cpds. The cpt3 splits through nesting established primary nouns, simultaneously fulfilling an exocentric function, i.e. a function which does not result from its basic function as the given part of speech. The question stands if the method applied results from syntagmatic economy, i.e. to eliminate long descriptive cpds or serves as means to transform a nominal group into a cpd. On the other hand, it might not be excluded that this process suggests an ontological approach, insisting the incorporation of specific features into a word (-being) instead of qualifying it from outside (juxtaposition).
