The speech act theory: A preliminary investigation

Pages 49-53 | Received 01 Sep 1984, Published online: 24 Oct 2012

Abstract

This article explores the usefulness of the speech act theory in specifying the semantic features of the Southern Sotho ideophone. The semantic categories distinguished within the perlocutionary framework were problematic and remain preliminary. However, the act shows substantial potential for further investigation.
