Abstract

The term devocalization is frequently used in the descriptions of intervocalic stops /bh/, /d/ and /g/ in Xhosa. Phonetic descriptions of these stops reveal a number of discrepancies which are investigated by means of various computer-assisted techniques. Computerized experimental phonetic data will be presented to prove that it is an oversimplification to relate this phenomenon solely to the presence or absence of voice but that other factors should also be taken into consideration when dealing with this phenomenon.
