Abstract
The purpose in this article is to point out certain resemblances and developmental tendencies concerning traditional praise poems (direto tša magoši) and modem praise poems in Northern Sotho. Some of the most significant architectural characteristics of the poems are examined and compared with one another. The following aspects will be dealt with: (1) reality and fiction; (2) praise motifs and spatial depiction; (3) the narrator's perspective; (4) nature of stanzas; and (5) lexical paradigm.
Die doel met die artikel is om bepaalde ooreenkomste en ontwikkelingstendense ten opsigte van tradisionele prysgedigtc (direto tša magoši) en moderne prysgedigte in Noord-Sotho aan te toon. Slegs enkele belangrike argitektoniese kenmerke van die gedigte word ondersock en met mekaar vergelyk. Die volgende aspektc word in oënskou gencem: (1) werklikheid en fiksie; (2) prysmotiewe en ruimtelike uitbeelding; (3) vertel- lersgesigspunt; (4) aard van strofes; en (S) leksikale paradigmas.
