Pages 84-108 | Published online: 24 Oct 2012

Abstract

The methods used in the compilation of bilingual dictionaries constitute some of the significant variables affecting and determining the value of these dictionaries. This article addresses some of these factors. Attention is given to such aspects as the lexicon structure, classificatory labels and the geographical distribution of languages. A situation analysis of dictionaries that bridge the gap between Afrikaans and African languages is given. Some features of the analysed dictionaries are outlined and perceived user needs are categorised.
