Abstract
Rules of speaking and, more generally, norms of interaction are both culture-specific and largely unconscious. People who are bilingual often switch from one of their codes or languages to the other without being in the least aware of this. In this article the aspect of code-switching in an urban situation is discussed. It shows that the fluent alternation between two languages normally requires a high level of bilingual competence. Code-switching involves enough knowledge of two (or more) grammatical systems to allow the speaker to draw from each system only those rules which the other shares, when alternating one language with another.
Spraakreëls, en meer spesifiek, norme van interaksie is kultuur-spesifiek en word grotendeels onbewustelik toegepas. Mense wat tweetalig is, wissel dikwels van een van hul kodes of tale na 'n ander sonder om in die minste daarvan bewus te wees. Hierdie artikel handel oor die aspek van kodewisseling in 'n stedelike situasie. Daar word aangetoon dat die afwisseling van twee tale 'n groot mate van taalvaardigheid vereis. Kodewisseling vereis genoeg kennis van twee (of meer) grammatikale sisteme om die spreker in Staat te stel om slegs van daardie reels wat die twee tale deel, gebruik te maak, wanneer twee tale met mekaar afgewissel word.
