Pages 105-112 | Received 01 Oct 2001, Published online: 24 Oct 2012

Abstract

In discussing the functions of rhyme and repetition we have to distinguish between (a) the essential verse units, i.e. the interdependent parts and the sentence being the entire verse or poem, and (b) the additional units, such as the stanza, the poem and the cycle. Within the essential units rhyme and repetition establish symmetry. In the stanza and the poem rhyme determines symmetry as well as the boundary between the interdependent units. Repetition, however, has no other function than to establish symmetry, except when the repeated segment is a word stem, word or phrase used as a rhyming segment. Then repetition also determines the boundary between the interdependent units within the additional verse unit when it occurs as the entire poem.
