Abstract
THE PRESIDENT STATE OF HUMAN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE RSA WITH SOME REFERENCES TO SOCIOLOGY sociology: The author criticises the role of the human sciences in South Africa. Special reference is made to the solution or better understanding of socio economic problems: the acceptability of research findings: the scientific quality of research: the measure in which an own methodology is developed: inter-disciplinary co-operation, particularly in international research programmes and contributions to international journals. With regard to the relatively small amount of money which government departments allocate to sociological research and the relatively few career possibilities for sociologists, attention is focused on the following questions: Is sociological research adequately problem and practice orientated? Is there adequate specialization in the training of sociologists? Do sociologists collaborate with colleques in other disciplines? Do the results of sociological research reach the policy makers? It is advocated that sociologists should in future participate in research bearing on race relations and related pro grammes which could make a valuable contribution towards a better understanding of, or even the possible solution of South Africa's most urgent problems.
