Abstract
The citizen force and the family. Since 1983 all white male South African citizens under 55 years of age have been compelled to do national service in the citizen force in accordance with the Defence Amendment Act of 1982. Family problems that originate because of military camps were the focus of this investigation. The theoretical grounding is in accordance with the systems model with the functionalism of Parsons and the systems theory of Von Bertalanffy as methodological directive. From the investigation it was clear that the citizen force has a negative influence on the family. It is recommended that the authorities campaign against the lack of information about the citizen force and supply details of support systems to the public. Discrimination suffered by citizen force members in respect of occupational situations deserves attention. Similar investigations should be repeated using larger samples of citizen force members and their families to increase the descriptive and explanatory power of the research design.
