The developmental pathway approach is compared to the traditional family life cycle approach with family development and is regarded as more appropriate for understanding family change: The marital histories of the study sample, which include incidents of marital disruption, are presented for discussion, ideologies of ‘the family’ are questioned and, finally, it is suggested that marital disruption should be considered as an integral part of the study of marriage.
