Codetermination in post-apartheid South Africa?

The appropriation of the German term ‘codetermination’ (Mitbestimmung) over the past decade by members of the South African government and academic, labour and business communities alike begs a closer look at the similarities and differences of the two countries’ experiences with industrial relations and democratization. This article argues that for both historical and contemporary political reasons, differences far outweigh similarities.
