Abstract
An attempt is made to appraise the possible economic, political and military advantages that South Africa could obtain through the use of nuclear energy. The recently developed uranium‐enrichment process has made the development of for instance a nuclear weapon, a greater reality, but various factors would have to be considered before such a step could ever be contemplated. Although it has been stressed that South Africa's nuclear research programme is solely aimed at the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the question as to nuclear‐weapon status for South Africa, has in the past already been raised and is not a matter that can be ignored completely.
