ABSTRACT
This article is a rejoinder to criticism of our analytical perspective on ethnicity and ethnic group formation in South Africa. We reply (i) to the claim that the typology of ethnic concepts of McKay and Lewins (1978) relies entirely on the subjective dimension of ethnic identification, and ignores the role objective factors play in ethnic group formation; and (ii) comment on the relationship between minority groups and ethnic groups, with specific reference to the South African context.
