The freedom charter and socialist strategy in South Africa

Pages 75-90 | Published online: 25 Feb 2007

ABSTRACT

In this paper several interpretations of the Freedom Charter are examined. Particular attention is paid to the South African Communist Party's interpretation of it in terms of the theory of national‐democratic revolution. The origins of this theory are identified in the analysis of the underdeveloped world advanced by the international communist movement during the 1950's. In conclusion some criticisms of the application of the theory of national‐democratic revolution to South Africa are identified and discussed.
