ABSTRACT
There is more than one option open to the educator who is convinced of the necessity for a more overt programme of political education. One option, fairly popular overseas, is a modular approach.
At a Johannesburg high school a short experiment using the modular approach was conducted with matriculants during March 1986. Two topics namely “the cold war and disarmament” and “constitutional options for the RSA” were tackled. Lively debates were the order of the day. In the end, however, a more rational approach to politics prevailed. The pupils were, when questioned afterwards, overwhelmingly in favour of an explicit course in political education. In our society this controversial but fundamental issue needs further analysis.
