ABSTRACT
The study of political leadership involves far more than an examination of the public policies pursued by a leader, or of his political style. These are only two ingredients of what is a multi‐faceted phenomenon. Using Margaret Hermann's five ingredients of leadership as their framework for analysis, the authors offer a wide‐ranging discussion of the political leadership of President FW de Klerk. They emphasise that this is an exploratory study and that a great deal of research still has to be done in what remains a neglected field of scholarly inquiry in South Africa.
