Abstract
In 1991, the first direct elections to the Legislative Council based on geographical constituencies were held in Hong Kong. Before the elections, various polls were conducted to predict the winners and the vote shares obtained by the candidates in each constituency. This article investigates the results of polls conducted by three academic institutions. The results of two of these institutions were found to be generally consistent, but the third institution produced somewhat different results. It is suggested that the use of proper survey methods is of utmost importance in enhancing the overall validity and reliability of such polls.
