The Marx Models as Conceptual Models in School Effectiveness Research

Abstract

This paper discusses the educational and organisational theory of Ernst Marx, the educational‐organisational models he developed and their use in Dutch secondary schools. Examples from Dutch research and practice illustrate the authors’ thesis that the Marx models can be used to get a better grip on what makes schools effective, why and how. Because of the international movement towards greater autonomy of schools and empowerment of teachers, special attention is paid to the policy‐making capacity of schools.
