Formation of Fluoride-Containing Coordination Compounds by Decomposition of Transition-Metal Tetrafluoroborates

Pages 379-389 | Received 08 Dec 1981, Published online: 19 Dec 2006

Abstract

Transition-metal tetrafluoroborates are useful starting materials for the synthesis of fluoride-containing coordination compounds. In the presence of certain ligands first-row transition metals yield compounds of stoichiometry ML4F2 (monomers), M2F2 (ligand)n (anion)2 (dimers), M4F4 (ligand)12 (anion)4 (tetramers), M2F3 (ligand)m (anion) (polymers), and MF2 (ligand)2 (polymers), depending upon the metal used, the particular ligand, and the solvent system.
