Abstract
A content analysis of the ‘pictures of teaching’ printed in teacher training institutions' prospectuses was undertaken and the view of teaching conveyed by the photographs was compared with survey type evidence which describes current primary school practice. It was found that the image of teaching conveyed by the photographs does not reflect the realities of contemporary classroom life. It is argued that institutions should include in their prospectuses photographs which portray something of the diversity of approaches to primary teaching and of the challenges of teaching in today's schools.
