EFFECT OF MAP SCALE ON STREAM ORDERS

ABSTRACT

In any scheme of stream ordering, the order assigned to a given stream segment depends on the scale of the map used to make the drainage basin analysis, since new forkings at the headwaters may become observable as the map scale is increased. If one new set of forkings becomes observable, the Strahler orders increase by one; the consistent (“logarithmic”) scheme of orders recently proposed by Scheidegger changes values in varying amounts depending on the topology of the newly observable streams.

RÉSUMÉ

Dans tout système de classification des cours d'eau, l'ordre assigné à un segment de rivière dépend de l'échelle de la carte utilisée pour faire l'analyse des bassins de drainage, puisque de nouvelles bifurcations aux eaux principales peuvent devenir décelables quand l'échelle de la carte est augmentée. Si une nouvelle série de bifurcations devient décelable, les ordres de Strahler augmentent d'une unité: le système (logarithmique) de classement proposé récemment par Scheidegger change les valeurs de montants variables dépendant de la topologie des cours nouvellement décelés.
