Factors Affecting Students’ Choice of Science Subjects in Nigerian Secondary Schools

Pages 99-109 | Published online: 07 Jul 2006

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate factors influencing the choice of science subjects in Nigerian secondary schools. 1240 students aged between 12 and 18 years from 31 secondary schools in Benue and Cross River States of Nigeria were given scales on intelligence, attitudes to science, personality and ‘subject choice and rated ability’, to determine the effect of age, sex, attitudes to science, IQ and personality on science choice. Results from t‐test analysis, correlation and multiple regression analyses showed that attitudes to science was the most important factor in science choice, followed by IQ. Sex and personality were important to a lesser degree. The place of age in science choice needs further investigation.
