Abstract
The under‐representation of women in science has been well reported. It is also known that when pupils are allowed to choose options their intended career is a major factor. This paper presents findings that young secondary pupils have stereotyped ideas about the appropriateness of certain jobs for men and women. Careers such as pilot, motor mechanic, electrician and computer engineer are seen by pupils to be much more suitable for males than females. The consequences of these results for the cause of women in science are considered.
