Abstract
This article describes a preliminary survey of the views held by second year sixth form students at a range of subjects at A level and degree level, with a particular focus on mathematics and physics. The main technique used, a simple questionnaire, showed that these subjects were generally perceived unfavourably in comparison with other subjects, though these perceptions were complex; and that interest was apparently a major factor in subject choice. Interviews with a 5% sample, the secondary technique, reinforced both this impression of complexity and the importance of interest as a determinant of subject choice. Strong links were demonstrated between perceptions of subjects at A level and degree level, with consequent implications for the quality of courses and teaching at earlier stages in schools.
