Socio-spatial Aspects of Changes in Educational Services: Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, 1970–88

Pages 137-153 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

Changes in the elementary school system, the number and distribution of schools, occur in many cities and reflect changes in the size, age-structure and distribution of the population. The present research studies the spatial aspects of changes in school distribution and the socio-spatial implications in two cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in which changes in school distribution have been very marked in recent years. It seeks answers to the following three questions. Why do such changes occur? Where in each city are such changes taking place? What do such changes mean to the population, the neighbourhood and the city?
