Abstract

The paper by Lewandowsky (1908) is hardly unknown to those who have been interested in the way object properties are represented and how their retrieval can be disrupted after brain damage. All the important neuropsychological papers concerned with the representation of object colour give credit to Lewandowsky for bringing our attention to its possible separation from object form. However, for those who are not able to read the paper in the original, there must be a doubt as to the exact ideas expressed by Lewandowsky. The translation here makes clear that his observations were profound. For reasons of brevity it is taken from the earlier published conference proceedings held at Amsterdam 2nd-7th September, 1907 rather than the longer journal article (Lewandowsky, (1908). The translation below is from: Abspaltung des Far-bensinnes durch Herderkrangung des Gehirns, published in G.A.M. van Weyenburg (Ed.), Compte Rendu des Travaux du ler Congres International de Psychiatrie, de Neurologie, de Psychologie et de I'Assistance des alienes. Amsterdam: J.H. de Bussy, pp.402-407.
