Public attitudes to elective abortion 1967–1982: Stability and complexity

Abstract

In 1967 the law in the United Kingdom relating to elective termination of pregnancy was changed to make it more generally permissible. It is commonly stated that since that date public attitudes have become more liberal or permissive. Examination of the replies given to a number of public opinion polls on the topic carried out from 1967 to 1982 suggest, however, that public opinion has remained stable, although complex.
