Abstract
Staff perceptions of the ward environment in the special care baby unit (SCBU) and the children's orthopaedic ward of a district general hospital are compared using the Work Environment Scale (Moos, 1981). SCBU staff reported their actual work environment as being more stressful than did staff on the orthopaedic ward. The ideal work environment of the SCBU staff was similar to the actual environment of the orthopaedic staff. Reasons for the differences are discussed briefly.
