Abstract

The stability of mood state during pregnancy was examined in 43 women with overt diabetes and compared to 68 nondiabetic pregnant controls. All women completed the Profile of Mood State-Bipolar Form during the mid-second and early third trimester of their pregnancy. Results indicated that the women with overt diabetes were more anxious than the controls. There was a trend for the women with diabetes to be more depressed than controls. The two groups did not differ on the agreeable-hostile or confident-unsure subscales. Comparisons across time indicated that mood was stable for both groups of pregnant women. Additionally, older women reported less anxiety than younger women and unmarried women were more hostile than married women. The relationship between mood state and blood glucose level was modest.
