Abstract

We investigated frightening (threatening, frightened, or dissociated) maternal behaviour as the proposed explanation of the association between maternal unresolved state of mind regarding loss and disorganized infant attachment (Main and Hesse, 1990). We established frightening maternal behaviour can be identified in home observations, even in a lowrisk sample (n = 12), and was predicted at the trend level by unresolved maternal loss.
