Social factors affecting the onset of puberty

Pages 109-110 | Published online: 11 Dec 2007

Abstract

The first three papers of this issue make up a special feature examining the social factors that affect the onset of puberty. Such factors may include family composition, interpersonal relationships with parents and/or peers, family stress and experience of sexual abuse, the cultural and historical context, and perceptions of puberty as mediated by the social environment (Alsaker, 1995).
