On opinion polls and multi-party elections

Pages 11-17 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

To aid the interpretation of public opinion polls of electors’ voting intentions, a formula is derived for the standard error associated with the lead percentage between the major parties and is compared with polls published in the U.K. in June 1983. Triangular coordinate paper is advocated to display the ‘popular vote’ percentages which arise in multi-party elections.
