r-invariant curves for linear regression

Pages 299-303 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

The planar locus where one additional point can be placed so that the correlation coefficient has the same numerical value as in the original data is found and explored. The sensitivity function of the correlation coefficient is zero on this locus. These points, however extreme, are not ‘detected’ by this coefficient. This locus suggests some restrictions on the usefulness of the correlation coefficient.
