Developmental Groupwork

Encouraging skills in self‐expression for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties

Pages 122-129 | Accepted 01 Dec 1996, Published online: 19 Oct 2007

Summary

Expressive activities and cognitive methods are used as complementary approaches in post‐trauma intervention and preventative work (Ayalon, 1986). Gersie and King (1992) describe ways of working with groups of adults which utilise story, myth and tasks in a planned, sequential manner. This article describes a project where expressive activities were used with pupils with emotional and behavioural needs. Themes were chosen for groups to work on, and activities undertaken to exemplify particular themes and to provide alternative channels for self‐expression. A project outline describes the overall purpose, aims and objectives of this developmental groupwork, and an evaluation of the sessions held at a special school for pupils with emotional and behavioural needs is presented.
