Summary
In this paper the author focuses on a way of the therapist working through the countertransference by finding ‘the third position’ in his own reality, external or internal, in order to know where, what and who he really is as a therapist in relation to the patient. He describes his work with a woman who protected herself from unbearable aspects of reality with a pervasive narcissistic, omnipotent defensive structure and who was seen three times a week for individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
