While there are stresses and conflicts imposed on an analyst adapting to work in general psychiatry, it is felt to have its positive aspects. Having responsibility for managing the disturbed patients, including the need to use physical treatment, ensures that the analyst examines the rationale for his actions. This leads to increased understanding of the presenting psycho-pathological process. To become a more influential force in the future development of general psychiatry, it would be helpful if more analysts were involved in this field.
