Multicultural society: the qualitative aspectsFootnote1

Abstract

This paper reviews the genesis and current experiences of European multicultural societies. Drawing on research findings, it examines the social problems experienced in education and related issues in employment, community life, social welfare and human rights. It concludes with a theoretical overview and suggestions for further research.

John Eggleston

Professor Eggleston is Chairman of the Department of Education, University of Warwick. He was Director of the DES project on the Educational and Vocational Experiences of Young People in Minority Ethnic Groups (published 1986) and was previously Director of the DES project on In‐Service Education for a Multi‐Cultural Society. He is Convenor of the Council of Europe working party on Multicultural Studies in Higher Education and founder Chairman of the Editorial Board of Multicultural Teaching.
