Abstract
The effect of applied a.c. electric fields on the optical activity of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal which forms ferroelectric, antiferroelectric and subphases was investigated. Applied fields greater than ∼10 kV m−1 induced an additional phase in the region between the SmC* and SmC*A phases. Also, applied fields stabilize the SmC*F2 phase at the expense of the SmC* phase.
