Fluorine-substituted unsymmetrical bent-core mesogens derived from resorcinol

Abstract

Forty new bent-core compounds, unsymmetrically substituted about a central phenyl ring, were investigated for their mesomorphic properties. The effect of fluorine substituents in different positions of the phenyl rings of one of the arms of the bent-core compounds on the mesophases were examined in detail. Most of the compounds exhibit the lamellar antiferroelectric B₂ mesophase. The mesophases were investigated by textural observation by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies.
