Liquid crystalline perfluoroazomethines and perfluoropropenes exhibiting large dielectric anisotropies

Abstract

Novel liquid crystalline compounds containing phenylperfluoroazomethine and cyclohexylperfluoropropene moieties have been synthesized. The perfluoroazomethine compounds exhibited large Δ∊ values of up to 24.3, which is greater than those of the trifluorobenzene or trifluoromethoxybenzene derivatives that are used in TN‐TFT LCDs. The perfluoropropene compounds exhibited low values of Δn (0.044–0.057) as well as large Δ∊ values (6.3–8.1), which are the properties required for reflection‐type LCDs.
