3. The Richardson classification system, which is unique to Princeton, was devised by Ernest Cushing Richardson, a University Librarian from 1890 to 1920. At that time, the Dewey classification system was felt to be inappropriate for a research collection, and the Library of Congress system was not yet fully developed.

4. That idyllic setting was violently transformed some 20 months later to the horror of the relatively small community of international liquid crystal researchers when four students protesting the Vietnam War were massacred by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State campus on May 4, 1970.
