ABSTRACT

A new, fast image-enhancement algorithm, for optical microscopy of liquid crystalline systems, is proposed. This is based on higher order statistical parameters in conjunction with a discrete wavelet transform analysis and uses a MATLAB tool. The enhanced images are compared with those produced by currently used global histogram equalisation algorithms – and appear to be superior. The system chosen to evaluate this new algorithm was a two-component system with a low concentration of ZnO nanoparticles dispersed in the liquid-crystalline phase of p-n-dodecyloxy benzoic acid.
