Abstract

In this paper we have reported results of X-ray diffraction studies and refractive index measurements of the compound p-n-butoxybenzylidene-p'-n-butylaniline (BBBA). The compound BBBA possesses three smectic phases, cybotactic nematic phase and ordinary nematic phase. Orientational order parameters of the aligned sample have been determined using the X-ray data and refractive indices values. (P 2) values determined from optical measurements agree with the Maier-Saupe theoretical values but (P 2), (P 4) determined from X-ray intensity measurements differ from the theoretical values.
