A new family of chiral smectic liquid-crystalline compounds having a core structure of (Y [dbnd] C[tbnd]C or CH2CH2) have been synthesized and their thermal stabilities have been examined systematically in terms of influences of the linkage between the benzene ring and the pyridine ring, and the chain length of the terminal alkyl group.
